Looking For Victorian Dollhouses
By Norman Burr

Doll houses can be wonderful gifts for young girls or just for people who love collectibles and beautiful things, and when you are looking for something special, you need to take a look at a Victorian doll house. Victorian dollhouses are beautifully elaborate and grand, and when you are in a place where you are thinking about moving forward and finding the right dollhouse, you should take a look at what might make a Victorian dollhouse special.

In the first place, take a look at some of history that goes along with Victorian architecture in general. Victorian architecture had its heyday between 1839 and 1900, replacing the Georgian and Greek styles that came before that. Georgian and Greek-styled houses prioritized classical symmetry and clean lines. They were devoted to order and to a strong sense of balance. By comparison, the classic Victorian house is significantly more disordered, asymmetrical and flamboyant. Rather than embracing clean lines, Victorians preferred houses with elaborate, fanciful accents.

When you are looking to identify a Victorian dollhouse, consider the fact that you are looking for very tall, very steep roofs. Many of these houses have multiple gables and both the inside and the outside are going to feature elaborate gingerbread trim. You'll find that the chimneys have beautifully layered shingles and that the towers of the house will tend to have peak cresting or finials. The windows will come in a number of different sizes and shapes and stained glass was very popular. This can create a look that is very busy and very frenzied, but oftentimes, the end result is something lovely and fanciful. In many ways, Victorian dollhouses are very much fairytale homes.

Many different materials were used when you are looking at the exterior of a Victorian home. You will find that some of the materials include board and baton, clap board, and stucco. Several different finishes might be use for the home, and the trim could be painted in colors that were vastly different from the rest of the house. Your Victorian dollhouse might have many different colors on the outside; simply take a look at a book on Victorian architecture to see how varied it could get.

When you are looking for the right dollhouse for someone, consider how beautiful a Victorian dollhouse can be. It is perfect for someone who appreciates beautiful flourishes and delicate touches, and the furniture that you can purchase for it is just as elaborate as the homes themselves. These houses do tend to be a little more expensive, but you will find that they are perfect gifts for the right person. Do keep in mind that Victorian dollhouses can feature very fragile, very breakable pieces, and should perhaps be given to older children.

Take some time and look at the various Victorian dollhouses out there before you make your decision. You may be giving someone a gift that will become an amazing heirloom and treasured possession for future generations.
